Removable as required to expose the hex-head spanner incorporated within the tang. These scales are a handle and can also be whittled to form tinder and kindling (think of a feather stick) so you’ll always have a dry source of ignition in an emergency situation. Treated with linseed oil to enhance weather resistance and ignition characteristics.
